The urine adulteration test is used as an orienting check to assess whether a urine sample, before or during a drug test, may have been diluted, manipulated or mixed with foreign substances. How to use the urine adulteration test

  1. Prepare the urine sample: the sample should be fresh, clean and collected according to the usual requirements.
  2. Dip the test strip: briefly bring the reaction pads into contact with the urine sample.
  3. Remove excess urine: gently wipe the strip along the edge of the sample cup.
  4. Observe the reaction time: read the individual parameters after the specified time.
  5. Compare with the colour chart: compare the colour of the test pads with the supplied reference chart.

Why a urine adulteration test can be useful

Urine tests are among the most commonly used methods in drug screening. One reason is their high practical reliability in many situations: often, not only the original drug substance is detected, but also its breakdown products, known as metabolites. These metabolites are formed in the body after consumption and are excreted in urine.

This makes urine drug tests suitable for many screening purposes. At the same time, urine samples can in principle be deliberately influenced – for example by heavy dilution, by adding chemical substances or by attempting to interfere with certain detection reactions.

The urine adulteration test addresses exactly this point: it checks whether key characteristics of the urine sample are plausible or whether there are indications of possible manipulation.

Common ways of adulterating urine samples

In urine manipulation, an attempt is made to influence the result of a drug test. The aim is often to produce a false-negative result, even though detectable substances or metabolites would actually be present in the urine.

  • Flushing: excessive drinking is used in an attempt to lower the concentration of drug metabolites in urine.
  • Chemical additives: substances are added to the sample to disturb test reactions or alter components in the urine.

  • Oxidising agents: substances such as bleach or other oxidants may be used in an attempt to influence detection reactions.
Important: a urine adulteration test does not detect drug use itself. It checks whether the urine sample shows abnormal parameters and whether the result of a drug test may therefore be less reliable.

Which parameters are checked?

The test strip contains several reaction pads. After contact with the urine sample, these are evaluated using a colour scale. The individual parameters provide indications as to whether the sample appears natural or whether dilution or adulteration may be possible.

Oxidants / PCC

Oxidants and pyridinium chlorochromate are not expected in natural urine. An abnormal result may indicate oxidising substances such as bleach, peroxides or similar adulterants.

Creatinine and specific gravity: indicators of diluted urine

A common way to influence a urine drug test is dilution. The aim is to reduce the concentration of substances or metabolites present in the urine to such an extent that a drug test may produce a negative result.

Two important indicators of dilution are creatinine and specific gravity. If the creatinine value is very low or the specific gravity is unusually low, this may indicate that the sample is strongly diluted.

Nitrite, glutaraldehyde and oxidants: indicators of chemical additives

In addition to dilution, urine samples can also be influenced by chemical additives. Such substances are sometimes used to disturb certain detection reactions in drug tests or to alter substances present in the urine.

The test therefore checks, among other parameters, for nitrite, glutaraldehyde and oxidants/PCC. These substances are not normal components of a natural urine sample. Abnormal results may therefore indicate possible adulteration.

pH value: indication of acidic or alkaline manipulation

The pH value of a urine sample can also provide indications of manipulation. Normal urine samples usually fall within a physiologically plausible range. If the pH value is clearly outside this range, this may indicate the addition of acidic or alkaline substances.

An abnormal pH value does not automatically mean that manipulation has definitely occurred. However, it is an important indication that the sample should be critically assessed and, if necessary, retested or analysed further.
