Interesting facts about the drug cocaine
Cocaine has a strong stimulating effect and is a very common intoxicating drug worldwide with a very high potential for addiction. Chemically, it belongs to the tropane alcaloids, a derivative of ecgonine. The use of cocaine inhibits the reuptake of adrenergic neurotransmitters and thus has an indirect sympathomimetic effect, which is noticeable in the following ways, among others:
- Dilatation of the pupils (mydriasis)
- Feeling of satisfaction / well-being
- Reduced need for relaxation
- Euphoria
- reduced feeling of hunger
- Increase in blood pressure
- Accelerated pulse / tachycardia
- possibly cardiac arrhythmias
Only about 1 – 4% of cocaine is excreted unchanged in the urine. Cocaine is mainly broken down in the liver and converted into ecgonine analogues. This degradation product can then be detected in the urine using our cocaine rapid test and thus the cocaine consumption can be confirmed.
With an increased dose of cocaine, other symptoms may also occur:
- Anxiety
- severe nervousness
- paranoid mood
The phase after cocaine intoxication is often characterized by mental and physical exhaustion, depression and insomnia to depression. The risk of a cocaine overdose exists mainly with smoking consumption.
An overdose of cocaine manifests itself with the following symptoms:
Central nervous system: Strong arousal, uncontrolled shaking movements, muscle twitches (tremor), convulsions, impaired consciousness, coma.
Circulation: tachycardia, high blood pressure (hypertension), chest tightness / heart tightness (angina pectoris), acute heart attack (myocardial infarction), hyperthermia up to 42 °C.
In the worst case, an overdose of cocaine can lead to a deep coma with light-rigid pupils, respiratory and circulatory failure and thus death. The combined consumption of alcohol and cocaine also leads to an increase in the cocaine effect on vital functions.
[ i ] In contrast to the drug treatment of opiate addiction, there is no scientifically proven drug or corresponding treatment for cocaine addiction so far! Currently, only psychotherapeutic treatments and therapies are available that can reduce the intensity of cocaine consumption by means of cognitive behavioral psychotherapy.
