How long does THC remain detectable in urine and saliva?

THC is a widespread type of drug. In order to be able to provide proof of drug use, drug tests or rapid drug tests are increasingly being used. These drug tests react to the THC, also known as „tetrahydrocannabinol“. THC binds to body fat, which results in a longer body’s own breakdown. A blanket statement about the detectability of THC is therefore particularly difficult.

Factors influencing the detectability of THC

Detectability of THC in urine and saliva

Various factors prevent a generally valid and reliable statement. In addition to gender, there are other reasons to consider. Women usually have a slightly higher body fat than men. Your own body fat is sometimes an important criterion, which is why THC is broken down more slowly or faster.

People with a higher fat content have longer to break down THC than people with a low fat content, but the frequency of THC consumption as well as the THC dose also play a role. The higher the dose, the longer it is detectable in the body. The same applies to frequency. With regular consumption, the THC detectability is significantly longer than with occasional consumption. Last but not least, the metabolism also plays a decisive role. Certain people have a more stimulated metabolism, which promotes faster degradation.

Guideline values for detectability of THC in blood, saliva and urine

Detecting THC in the blood: THC can still be detected in the blood about 3 – 4 hours after consumption.

THC in saliva: THC can be detected for up to 14 hours by means of a saliva test. Depending on consumption, even longer. (24 hours)

THC in urine: A urine sample has the longest detection time next to hair analysis. THC can be detected in the urine between 1 and 4 days, and even several weeks in the case of long-term consumption.

THC in the hair: There is also the possibility to prove THC consumption by means of hair samples. THC can even be detected in hair up to 90 days after consumption. However, hair tests also offer disadvantages. On the one hand, hair tests cannot be carried out as a rapid test or self-test, because for a hair analysis, the hair sample must be analyzed by a laboratory. In addition, hair analyses for THC are considered to be conditionally reliable, as a false positive result is also possible through passive consumption.
