Levamisole as an extender in cocaine
30.07.2023
The well-known worming agent levamisole was detected in more than 25% of the Bernese samples. Levamisole is an antiworm agent that is used in animals against nematodes and scabies mites.
How does levamisole get into the drug?
Among other things, you can find this question in South America. There it is used as a cheap cutting agent. But the drug also has other effects, such as enhancing the effect of cocaine by converting levamisole into a substance that has a similar stimulating effect as amphetamine.
However, the effect only occurs after the cocaine intoxication. As a result, users feel that the cocaine is of strong quality, or so the researchers suspect.
Worrying side effects
As is so often the case with cutting agents, there are other worrying side effects. In addition to high blood pressure and declining lung function, heart failure or a fatal immune deficiency can also be a possible consequence.
In medical circles, there are even reports of cases in which parts of the ears, lips or nose have died due to the circulatory disorders.

The Zurich cantonal police confirmed to the Rundschau that this online trend will continue to intensify.

LSD and MDMA as legal substances in therapeutic treatment
13.12.2023
What is otherwise illegal, namely the consumption of drugs such as MDMA or LSD, can now be legally used as a therapeutic measure in psychotherapy since 2014. The FOPH (Federal Office of Public Health) can issue a special permit for this, whereby the patient experiences several controlled „drug trips“ over a period of 1 – 3 years as part of an accompanied therapy.
In 2022, the FOPH issued over 250 such exemptions and the number is steadily increasing, but what about these previously illegal substances in the future? When it comes to approval, the experts agree. Here, it is expected that LSD as well as MDMA or psilocybin will come onto the market in the next few years. The situation is different with legalization – experts still disagree on this. Legalization would also bring corresponding disadvantages, such as the risk of uncontrolled consumption or a reduced interest in research.

Life without opioids – Report on Puls (SRF)
31.10.2022
A recent study by ETH Zurich shows that the consumption of opioids has increased sharply in Switzerland. Opioids are also very often prescribed for chronic pain, although opioids have a very high addictive potential.

Amazingly, after just one week of continuous use of opioids , the body has already developed a dependence. This dependence can develop into an addiction with compulsion to consume, loss of control and habituation to higher doses. Those affected talk about their experiences and findings after withdrawal. The pulse check describes the effects and risks of opioids: Opioids not only relieve pain in the central nervous system, but also trigger relaxation and feelings of happiness. What sounds pleasant, but in reality quickly leads to a fatal dependency.
